TPIE Recap: The Promise of Biophilic Design

tropical plants for indoor biophilic design

January gives each of us the promise of a New Year. But for the biophilic professional, the New Year is particularly exciting because it also delivers the excitement of the annual Tropical Plant International Expo (TPIE).

This three-day “plant fest” in (usually) sunny Fort Lauderdale is the industry’s leading showcase for innovations ––from rare exotic plants to eco-friendly pest management–– along with current trends and research in biophilic design. The conference offers countless opportunities for industry professionals to network, learn from and about each other, procure and collaborate.

The Interior Plantscapes (IPI) team at this year’s gathering did all the above. Here’s what we saw and learned – and how we can put that new knowledge to work for our valued customers.

What We Saw

The gem of every TPIE is the exhibit floor, where horticultural innovators from across the globe debut and showcase new product lines and plant species. From blue orchids to biodegradable grow pots, new product introductions help generate enthusiasm and spark creativity for plant designers, and provide an opportunity for us to look for new and exciting solutions for our clients

For many (including this author) the most anticipated and exciting aspect of each year’s TPIE exhibit floor is the showcase for the New Year’s new plants. Here are some of my personal favorites:

We are looking forward to incorporating these and other plants into our clients’ designs in upcoming years. We came away from this showcase brimming with ideas and energy to take into this year’s work.

What We Learned

The TPIE-organized Road Show was a valuable opportunity for IPI to visit our grower partners, on whom we rely on to supply us – and ultimately our customers – with the highest quality plants for their interior and exterior spaces.

Our team was the only one in attendance from the DMV, and we visited a dozen nurseries and growers throughout central Florida. Spending quality, face-to-face time with the owners and horticulturalists is important to us because of the personal relationships we nurture with them.

Seeing first-hand how they grow and care for the plants they provide us is why we are confident using their towering trees, eye-popping ornamentals or baby succulents in our biophilic solutions. By visiting with our growers, we can be assured our customers are getting the best plants available.

As important as the plants themselves are to any installation, the careful, informed thought behind them is equally important. That’s why our Business Development team participated in professional workshops to learn about the latest research and best-practices in biophilia for commercial spaces.

One of our favorite presentations included forward-thinking architects who are focusing on new theories of neuro-aesthetic design, a strategy that factors biophilia into design of workspaces that enhance the mental well-being of employees.

Crafting spaces that bolster creativity, while reducing stress is the goal of this neuroarchitecture. Interior Plantscapes envisions incorporating and refining those concepts and considerations into our designs. We are particularly thinking about better workplace recommendations as more employers call greater numbers of their staff back to the office.

What We Brought Back

In addition to just a bit of conference swag, our lasting takeaways from TPIE 2025 are:

  • Biophilia is informed by evolutionary biology, psychology, neuroscience, sociology, architecture and history
  • The incorporation of biophilic design into workplace planning is increasingly a scientifically-proven necessity
  • Interior Plantscape’s mantra of think before you plant is spot on
